Seasons Changes
SPRING
- Inspect roof for damage.
- Check fascia trim for deterioration.
- Have a professional inspect and maintain the air conditioning system.
- Examine water heater for rust and leaks.
- Look for water leaks in the home.
- Replace worn or damaged extension cords.
- Check fire extinguishers and replace if necessary.
FALL
- Inspect home for water leaks.
- Have a heating professional check the heating system annually.
- Protect against frozen pipes.
- Run gas-powered lawn equipment until fuel is depleted.
- Test emergency generator functionality.
- Have a certified chimney sweep inspect and clean flues.
- Remove birds’ nests from chimneys and outdoor electrical fixtures.
- Clean smoke and carbon monoxide detector covers and change batteries.
- Blow out lawn irrigation system.
- Clean gutters and downspouts.
- Replace window screens with storm windows.
SUMMER
- Check children’s backyard play equipment for safety.
- Inspect wood decks or concrete patios for deterioration.
- Ensure nightlights are functional at stairways.
- Check exterior siding for damage.
- Verify locks on all windows and doors.
- Inspect water hoses on appliances for cracks or bubbles.
- Create and practice an emergency escape plan with family.
WINTER
- Ensure adequate caulking or weatherstripping around windows and doors to reduce heating and cooling costs.
- Firewood at least 20 feet from the home’s foundation.
- Familiarize family members with the main gas valve and appliance valves.
- Clean the dryer exhaust duct and space under the dryer.
- Check electrical holiday decorations for tight connections.
- Clean kitchen exhaust hood air filter.
- Test all GFCI devices.
- Ensure caulking around bathroom fixtures is adequate to prevent water damage.
